NPP blames delay of nomination forms on “dumsor”

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says nomination forms for aspirants in its May 24 nationwide primaries have been dispatched to the regional capitals for distribution.

Nominations were scheduled to open on Monday, March 30 and end on April 10 but delay in the printing of the forms and an impending meeting of the party’s highest decision making body, the National Council, on Wednesday forced a suspension of the exercise.

But General Secretary of the party, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, blames the first reason on the erratic power supply.

“Because of the power outages we are suffering around the country, it was difficult for the printers to deliver the booklets in good time,” Mr Agyepong told TV3’s Jonathan Adams on Monday.

“Right now we are in the process of dispatching [the forms] to all the regional capitals so that interested aspirants can begin to pick the nomination forms.”

The nomination forms can be filed at GH¢10,000 for incumbent Members of Parliament (MPs) and those in constituencies not held by the party.

However, those challenging incumbent MPs will pay GH¢20,000 more. Women, youth and physically challenged aspirants will have 50 per cent rebate on the fees.

Wednesday’s crunch meeting by the National Council is expected to fine-tune regulations regarding women MPs and 12 seats in the Greater Accra Region.
