The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has vowed to wage war on people engaged in illegal water connection to get them punished.
Mr. Samson Ampah, the Ashanti Regional Communication Manager, said the activity had become a big worry and denying the company its critical revenue.
He, therefore, appealed for a strong public support, and announced a reward package to people who would volunteer information to the company, leading to the arrest of the offenders.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi, he said the company found it disturbing, the refusal by some consumers to do the right thing by following the correct procedures to get water flowing through the taps in their homes.
Mr. Ampah cited instances where water meters installed by GWCL were tampered with to distort the meter reading in order for the beneficiaries to evade the payment of the correct bills for the water consumed.
He said they had stepped up efforts to deal with these illegalities and had set up a “Laws Control Team” to move from house-to-house to disconnect services, which did not have proper documentation.
They would not leave it at that, he said, but would also prosecute the offending property owners.
Mr. Ampah said the company was determined to achieve a high level of operational efficiency in order to improve the supply of water to the population.
He said there were plans to carry out expansion works on the Barekese Headworks to raise the supply of treated water to Kumasi and its environs to 48 million gallons a day from the current daily flow of 30 million gallons, by year 2025.
