The Upper West Regional Secretariat of Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has started a Mutual Insurance Scheme for its members throughout the region.
The scheme demands that all members contribute according to the sizes of their families.
Mr Nuhu Mahama, the Industrial Relations Officer of the GPRTU, said this at the inauguration of eight branch executives who were recently elected by their various unions.
He said every member would pay a minimum of 2,000 cedis per head depending on the number of people in a family.
“The payment will last for a maximum period of three months after which we would have gotten the capital to embark on the insurance scheme”, he said.
Mr Mahama said members would at the end of the three months’ payment period, determine the type of services they would need at various approved health facilities.
“It is however not compulsory for members but we shall as much as possible encourage more members to contribute to the scheme as they will stand to benefit tremendously in the near future”, Mr Mahama said.
He cautioned drivers and porters against the use of violence and derogatory remarks at various stations as that could deny them clients for other competing transport companies.
