Coordinator proposes sign language in assembly concept

The Eastern Regional Coordinator of Special Education, Ms Augustina Kuadey has called for the introduction of the sign language into the district assembly concept to help integrate the hearing impaired into the society.

She made the proposal at the launch of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the Mampong-Akuapem Senior High Technical School for the Deaf at Koforidua.

She appealed to the teachers of the school to be diligent to help the student realize their God giving talents.

Ms Akuadey urged the students to study hard to grow up to be good citizens to occupy their rightful place in society.

Deputy Director in-charge of Special Education, Mr Patrick Otaa said the Ghana Education Service will relocate the school to help it overcome some of the challenges it faces at its current site.

He said despite government’s support, a lot was still needed from institutions and individuals.

The Headmaster of the School, Mr Joseph Sam, said the anniversary which would be observed in November this year, would be used to raise funds for the construction of a new administration block and a dining hall for the school.

He expressed regret that after 40 years, the school still uses a rented premise as its administration block.

Mr Sam said the school also needed accommodation for its staff and the students, as well as more classroom blocks.
