Heavy security at Kpone’s Sunon Asogli plant

There is heavy security around the Sunon Asogli Power Plant in Kpone as part of high surveillance mounted by the police after a violent demonstration on Tuesday, March 10.

The demonstrators had threatened to set fire to the power plant with the reason that they are experiencing worse power supply despite the township accommodating the plant.

The cutlass-wielding demonstrators clashed with the police, resulting in the firing of tear gas and rubber bullets.

Speaking on TV3’s News @10 on Tuesday, Public Relations Officer of the Tema Regional Police Command Juliana Obeng said men have been placed at strategic points to ensure that an “ugly” situation does not happen.

She said the police officers have been placed at the Sunon Asogli Power Plant, the Kpone Traditional Council as well as in the Kpone township.

“Apart from that we have adequate men on stand-by at the Kpone District Police Headquarters and the Tema Regional Headquarters to make sure again that with our men already on the ground if we need enforcement we will be able to send those men there.”

The Assistant Superintendent of Police, therefore, assured that “Asogli plant is very much protected with enough security to maintain law and order”.

Meanwhile, management of Sunon Asogli Power Plant has expressed eagerness to return to the negotiation table with youth of Kpone to get their grievances resolved as the standoff only goes to affect not only the Kpone township but the entire nation.
