Minister-Designate Okays Large Ministerial Team

The acting registrar of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Mrs. Mercy Bampo Addo, last Wednesday told the appointments committee of Parliament that the Office of the President is the highest in the land and therefore calls for “people who can exhibit certain characteristics, such as being circumspect, mature, a team player and steadfast.”

The 54-year old mother of two and a graduate of the University of Ghana, Legon, with a BA (Hons) in history and a graduate diploma in journalism and communications, has been nominated for appointment as deputy minister at the Office of the President.

Asked whether she is comfortable with the number of ministers so far appointed by the government, Mrs. Bampo Addo said there are new demands on the government, which call for such decisions to be taken.

She mentioned gender issues, NEPAD and information/communications technology as areas, which must necessarily be handled effectively for the development of the country.

On her views on the appointment of women into positions of trust, she explained that wherever women find themselves, leaders emerge, adding: “Women in leadership positions work diligently and achieve results without throwing their weight around.”

The deputy minister-designate, said if approved, she would bring her experience as a trainer and public relations practitioner to bear on the office of the president.

Mrs. Bampo Addo assured there are many qualified people at GIMPA and her appointment to the presidency would not affect work there.
