Taxi driver arrested with 28 parcels of suspected cannabis

A taxi driver arrested by the police at Akomadan in the Offinso North District with 28 parcels of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis was on Thursday put before a Kumasi Circuit Court.

The plea of Akwasi Fosu was not taken and he was remanded into prison custody to make his next appearance on Tuesday, March 17.

Police Superintendent Emmanuel Akonnor told the court, presided over by Mr. William Boampong, that the officers were on patrol duty and intercepted the car the accused was using to transport the narcotic drug on the Techiman-Kumasi road at about 0200 hours on February 3.

He said when the officers saw the vehicle, a Toyota Corolla, approaching without its headlight on, they became suspicious and signaled the driver to stop, but he refused.

The prosecution said after a hot highway chase, Fosu branched off the main road and headed towards Derma, using a feeder road and after covering some few metres, he abandoned the car and fled into the bush.

Police Supt Akonnor said the officers drove the vehicle to the Akomadan Police Station, where a search uncovered the substance concealed in two big sacks.

Fosu was tracked down three weeks later, arrested and handed over to the Drug Enforcement Unit.

Meanwhile, samples of the substance had been sent for forensic laboratory examination.
