Sammy Awuku curses those behind tribalistic placards

National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammy Awuku, has rained curses on those behind the allegedly photo-shopped placards making the rounds on social media purporting to have been part of Wednesday’s ‘Ya bre” demonstration by pressure group Movement for Change (MFC) in Kumasi.

Some of the placards which were held by a number of the demonstrators had messages that slighted people from some particular regions of the country.

The group demonstrated over what its leaders described as the harsh economic conditions in the country and the worsening power crisis.

Hours after the demonstration however, some pictures appeared on facebook and twitter of some placards wielded by three young men that had unsavoury language. Some of the placards read; “We told you Northerners are not fit to rule this country,” “How can a Northerner rule this country? Vote Mahama out” and “Mahama, why are you given (sic) the oil money to the Northerners.”

The leadership of the NPP in the Ashanti region as well as the leaders have since roundly condemned what they say are photo-shopped pictures. They suspect elements of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), alarmed by the crowd that poured onto the streets of Kumasi, are working round the clock and employing any means necessary to downplay the effect of the demo.

Speaking on Okay FM Thursday, Sammy Awuku insisted the protestors did not carry any such placards, especially as the demo was led by Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, NPP Running mate and a northerner.

“There were no such placards during the demonstration. In fact a lot of people can attest to that. The media was there and so ask yourself why they couldn’t capture such placards. So where is this coming from? We (NPP) summon those behind the tribal placards to God. They will be dealt with.

“If we indeed did those things, then God should punish us but if not us then God should punish that person” he cried.

He continued: “The demonstration was indeed a very peaceful demo and I must say that we only went there to vent our anger because we are suffering.”
