The current power crisis could have been mitigated by the power plants imported into the country by the Kufuor administration some eight years ago, former Energy Minister Joseph Kofi Adda has said.
The 126-Megawatts plants, procured by Mr Adda in 2007, were described as “toy machines” by former CEO of power producer Volta River Authority (VRA), Dr Charles Wereko-Brobbey, and have been dormant for years.
Investigations by StarrFMonline.com have revealed that Government intends shipping some of the plants-on-wheels to Sierra Leone.
Speaking about the revelation on Starr Today on Monday evening, Mr Adda told Isaac Kaledzi in an interview that the current power crisis could have been lessened were the plants in use.
“Absolutely,” he answered, adding: “We’re talking about a deficit of 300, 400 now going up to 500 Megawatts. If we used this generating plants, we would have had 126 Megawatts.”
He said the Government must come clean on revelations that the plants were being ferried to Sierra Leone.
“Why do they get them out of the country when we bought and paid for them for the first time in the history of this county…why would they go to Sierra Leone, why would they go to any other country for that matter and how much will we be earning?
“So the second question will be VRA or Government of Ghana: ‘How much are you being paid by that country for those plants?” he asked.
