Koforidua marks Valentine’s Day quietly

The celebration of the Valentine’s Day in the Koforidua Municipality took a low key, this year, unlike previous years, when the whole Municipality was virtually clad in red.

Most people were normally seen in their usual clothes but a few showed the Valentine mood in their dressing of red and pink attires, the colours that symbolise love.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Aunty Grace, a gifts shop owner, said her prices of gifts had not changed much from last year’s.

The prices of hampers and flowers, she said, ranged from GH¢10.00 to GH¢100.00 depending on the size and value of items packaged.

In spite of the low prices, she said, patronage was not encouraging.

Ruth Nyarko, a student, told the GNA that she was waiting for the night to fall to meet with some friends to celebrate the occasion.

Afua Monica, a seamstress, however, explained that she was cash strapped and has no lover, otherwise she would have had the best of the celebration.

Rebecca Asamoah, a trader said, she was shy to demonstrate her Valentine mood in her dressing, so avoid being tagged in red, she wore a different colour but she had planned a grand celebration for the evening.

Media hype and advertisement in the past years put February 14 on the agenda of Ghanaians as a day to exhibit their love in romantic activities, exchange of gives and to adorn themselves in the colours of love- red and pink.
