Mrs Amissah-Arthur tasks V/R to perform better in BECE/WASSCE

Mrs Matilda Amissah-Arthur, Wife of the Vice President, on Thursday described the falling standards of education in the Volta Region as “shameful” and challenged stakeholders to ensure that 2015 results at both the junior and senior high schools were good.
She said the trend of mass failures and poor results in Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in the region was unacceptable and must be worked on.
Mrs Amissah-Arthur was addressing a mini durbar of pupils and teachers at A.M.E. Zion Basic School at Kedzi in the Keta Municipal Area where she presented books, Rlg laptops and bottled water to the school.
She said Volta Region was a force to reckon with in education and urged teachers and parents to encourage pupils and students to make good use of the books and computers.
Madam Helen Adjoa Ntoso, Volta Regional Minister, spoke against teacher-absenteeism and urged teachers to spend “quality” time with pupils and students.
Mr Richard Quashigah, Member of Parliament for Keta, said it was unfortunate that academic performance in the region continued to dip and told the Ghana News Agency that his office would soon roll out quiz competitions in his constituency to engender interest in academic excellence.
Mr Raphael Kwashie, Keta Municipal Director of Education, said the Directorate was engaged in effective monitoring and supervision and assured that academic results in the municipal area would be better this year.
Mrs Amissah-Arthur had earlier visited the children’s ward of the Keta Municipal Hospital and gave lunch packs, biscuits and toys to children on admission.
She also presented books, Rlg laptops and bottled water to Abor R.C. Basic School.
