Chiefs urged to sustain national sanitation programme

Nana Bofo Bene, the Paramount Chief of Dwenem Traditional Area, on Saturday urged traditional rulers to sustain the national sanitation programme, instituted by the government to promote environmental cleanliness in communities.

He said the introduction of the national monthly clean up exercise was appropriate and in the right direction and required active support from chiefs and opinion leaders to sustain it.

Nana Bene gave the advice when addressing the chiefs and people of Dwenem in the Jaman South District of Brong-Ahafo, after taking part in the massive clean-up exercise within the community on Saturday.

Madam Dora Ama Tamea, the Jaman South District Chief Executive also took part in the well-participated exercise, which lasted for about four hours.

The people evacuated the two heaped refuse dumps in the town, weeded bushy areas, desilted choked gutters.

Nana Bene explained that as the embodiment of the people, chiefs ought to guard against partisan politics, embrace and support government policies and programmes that would speed up the process of development.

The traditional ruler observed that when chiefs actively engaged and contributed meaningfully to nation building, it would motivate their people to also play their part as well.

Nana Bene, who is also Vice President of the Brong-Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs, advised Ghanaians to promote personal hygiene, revisit and re-kindle the spirit of communal labour and voluntarism to promote good sanitation and quality health.

Madam Tamea appreciated the impressive turnout and entreated the people to maintain such communal spirit to avoid the outbreak of communicable diseases.

She pledged 50 bags of cement in support of the community to complete an on-going Police Post project initiated by the people.

Madam Tamea entreated the people to bury their political differences and support the government to achieve set targets for the second phase of the better Ghana agenda.
