30 km stretch of Kumasi roads to be asphalt surfaced

A total of 30 kilometres stretch of roads in the Kumasi metropolis would be asphalt surfaced this year, Mr. Theodore Quaye, Ashanti Regional Director of Urban Roads has announced.

These include Kejetia, the Central Business District (CBD), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Junction- Anloga Junction and Suame Roundabout.

He could, however, not tell the budget in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi.

Mr. Quaye said on-going construction works on some key road projects including the Dompoase-Kuwait, Buokrom Estate, Tafo, Denkyemuoso and Kwadaso would also be completed.

Last year, 78 kilometres of roads in the metropolis were re-sealed with another 55 kilometres undergoing bitumen surfacing.

He expressed discomfort with the situation where some drivers recklessly washed their vehicles on the road and said that tends to destroy the roads – cause potholes to develop on them.

The other contributing factor has been the careless handling of oil by mechanics sent in to fix broken down vehicles on the roads.

Mr. Quaye said it was important for all to avoid activities that would lead to the destruction of the roads because road construction and maintenance were expensive.
