J.B Danquah was no ‘coup plotter’ – Grandson

A grandson of the late Dr. J.B Danquah has described as sad allegations that his grandfather was incarcerated because he attempted to overthrow Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

“It was a fabrication and propaganda that he was a CIA agent…he died in 1965 and was in prison in 1962, he was in prison in 64 and died in 65…Nkrumah was overthrown in 1966 and yet still people will say that he overthrew Nkrumah.

“These are some of the fabrications and some of the lies,” Mr. Danquah-Adu who is also Member of Parliament for Abuakwa-North told host of Morning Starr Kafui Dey and co-host Kwaku Sintim-Misa (KSM) Wednesday.

Mr. Danquah-Adu also slammed the decision by the National Security to prevent his family from visiting the condemned cells at the Nsawam Prisons where the late statesman died.

The family had intended to visit the prisons today, Wednesday since their kinsman- a member of the ‘Big Six’ – who struggled for the independence of Ghana had spent some time in the prison under the Preventive Detention Act introduced by Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

But in a response to the request by the family, the Interior Minister said: “I wish to acknowledge with thanks receipt of your letter dated 22nd January, 2015.

“The matter was referred to the National Security Council and the Ghana Prisons who have both advised that that Prisons are security zones and therefore your request should not be acceded to”.

Danquah died in detention on February 4, 1965.
