Govt Seeks Support Of NDC Minority

The ruling New Patriotic Party is seeking to woo the support of the NDC minority in Parliament to adopt the President?s new declaration of a state of emergency in Dagbon. Parliament reconvenes on Wednesday to consider the resolution.

A leading member of the majority bench told Joy FM that, discussions have began aimed at getting the NDC to appreciate the position of government based on the latest intelligence reports on the situation in Dagbon.

The consultative process with the NDC is part of a far-reaching plan of action which includes the involvement of all NPP MP?s and allies to be present in Parliament on Wednesday. The NPP, the PNC, CPP and three independent MP?s command 109 seats vital for Wednesday?s vote as against the NDC?s 91.

The majority NPP, determined to see the President?s wish carried through is marshalling all resources at its disposal before Wednesday?s vote. Sources say, some members who are outside the country have been asked to cut short their trips for Wednesday?s vote.

The newly elected MP for Gomoa East Richard Quarm is also due to be sworn-in before the adoption of the resolution.

The ruling party failed to marshal the 101 votes required to endorse an extension of the state of emergency last Thursday. The NDC for the first time in more than a year rejected the extension by voting en bloc against it.

President Kufuor, in conformity with executive powers conferred on him, proclaimed a new declaration before the expiry of the previous state of emergency on the 18th April. The new declaration will expire on Friday unless Parliament accepts the President?s resolution for a three-month extension.
