Traders in the Sofoline Market in the Kumasi Metropolis have appealed to the Metropolitan Assembly to evacuate piles of refuse deposited in the market.
The traders said condition in the market was poor and unhygienic that could contaminate food items and lead to outbreak of diseases.
The traders made the appeal, when the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited the market last Saturday.
They alleged that on January 19 eight police personnel accompanied one Emmanuel, a building contractor, to deposit refusein front of some shops in the market.
The GNA sighted eight heaps of refuse dumps deposited in front of some stores at the market.
Mr James Owusu Ansah, Director of Agya Wusu Company Limited, dealers in building materials, and spokesman for traders, said the situation in the market had affected daily sales.
He said economic activities had slowed down because of the unsanitary condition at the market.
“The stench emanating from the refuse dumps is driving all our customers away”, he said.
