Create Fund for elected Assembly women – Sena

The Assembly woman for Kojo Beedu North-Low Cost Electoral Area, in the Effutu Constituency, Madam Elizabeth Awo Sena, has suggested to the Ministry for Local Government and Rural Development, to create a Fund for electoral areas with elected women as Assembly members.

This, according to her, will encourage more electoral areas to elect women into the District Assemblies, in line with government policy for more women to take part in grass root decision-making programmes.

Madam Sena who made the suggestion in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Winneba at the weekend, said it will also encourage more women to take part in the District Assembly concept..

She said the Fund that could be a small portion of the District Common Fund or any amount from the Ministry, should be used to support development projects of the choice of that particular electorate under the supervision of the Assembly.

The Fund, she said, could operate as that of the MPs.

She said the current situation did not favour and encourage more women to be elected to the District Assemblies than their male counterparts.

The Assembly woman said the situation where the Assemblies prepared Medium Term Plans without factoring in the main needs of the electorate, should be changed.

Madam Sena who is seeking re-election, said only two women have filed their nominations to contest the up-coming District Assembly Elections in Winneba.

She stated that during her entire four-year period as Assembly woman, the Municipal Assembly was able to provide only two projects, a six-classroom block, and a CHIP Compound in her electoral area.

The Assembly woman said there are some new schools in the area without electricity and water, and therefore appealed to NGOs and corporate bodies to come to the aid of the schools.
