Assembly to drag Ghana Post to court

The Environmental Health Department of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has threatened to drag Ghana Post to court over the filthy conditions at the Ahinsan Post Office.

The place has become an eyesore and health officers say they could no longer allow the situation to persist.

Mr Eric Antwi, a Principal Environmental Health Assistant, said several warnings to the company to tidy up the environment had gone unheeded.

He told journalists during an inspection tour of the facility that the last abatement notice was served on the company on December 9, last year, but nothing had been done to put things right.

The Post Office, which serves more than 1,500 clients at Ahinsan, Asokwa, Atonsu, Kaase and other surrounding communities, sits on a huge land and has had part of its fence collapsed.

This has not only made the place a convenient business point for drug peddlers and users but also provides space for slaughtering and smoking of animals by butchers. People openly defecate and graze their animals there.

Mr Antwi said the overpowering smell from the area has become a major health worry.

The Ashanti Regional Head of the Company, Mr Anthony Avorkliya, when contacted, told the Ghana News Agency that steps have been taken to tackle the mess.

He said money has been allocated money to clear the area of weeds and to remove the squatters.

The company, he said, is also in discussion with private businesses to establish and operate from the premises, which would soon be giving major facelift.
