Gov’t appoints new DG for GES

President John Mahama has, with immediate effect, made changes in the hierarchy of the Ghana Education Service (GES) with the appointment of Mr Jacob Kor as the new acting Director-General of the GES.

Until his appointment, Mr Kor was the Central Regional Director of the GES.

A highly placed source at the Flagstaff House, who disclosed this to the Daily Graphic, said the Greater Accra Regional Director of the GES, Mrs Elizabeth De-Souza, had been reassigned as the acting Deputy-Director-General of the GES.

It indicated that Mr Charles Aheto-Tsegah, who was the acting Director General of the GES, was to be reassigned as the acting Executive Director of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) of the GES.

The NCCA was established on a statutory basis in 2001 to lead developments in curriculum and assessment and to support the implementation of changes resulting from its work.

The source indicated that the appointees had been duly communicated to and that they were expected to assume their new offices without delay.

President Mahama has made education one of his topmost priorities when he outlined some educational packages in the latter part of last year.

Among those packages is the provision of better social services in under-served areas. The World Bank Group and Ghana recently signed a $156 million financing agreement to improve access to secondary education in deprived communities across the country.

The deal will also support the Ghana Secondary Education Improvement Project with the objective to enrol 30,000 new secondary school students, improve learning outcomes for 150,000 students in low-performing schools, and 2000 senior high school teachers, head teachers and other education officials.
