Sanitation by-laws must be reviewed – Dep Local Gov’t Minister

The Local Government Ministry is pushing for a review of the country’s sanitation by-laws as part of measures in obtaining maximum public cooperation in the National Sanitation Day programme.

The National Sanitation Day has been instituted by government to deal with Ghana’s poor sanitation situation.

The programme has witnessed low patronage since its inception.

Speaking on Morning Starr with host Kafui Dey, Monday, Deputy Minister for Local Government Kwadwo Agyei Agyekum said the existing penalties for violating sanitation laws are not punitive enough.

“ If you look at the penalty points in the by-laws, it is so low that someone will be more than willing to pay in court than to go and work somewhere.

“These are some of the things that we have to change”.

He described as discouraging instances where some citizens are seen going about their normal activities unconcerned while the exercise is ongoing.
