General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev. Dr. Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong, has expressed concerns over the “unnecessary” political tensions that engulf the nation during elections.
Dr Opuni-Frimpong who is leading the Council’s campaign dubbed ‘Ghana-We-Want’ says politicians and the Electoral Commission must strive to create a peaceful atmosphere during the 2016 elections.
“Anytime we are getting closer to elections, it’s like the country is about to break; please that must stop,” he bellowed in an interview on the Morning Starr with Kafui Dey, Tuesday.
He added: “You go to some countries; they are also having elections and there is nothing to show. You get to the airport, you get to the cities and there is nothing to show that they are having elections until somebody tells you”.
He bemoaned the scenarios in some African countries where citizens have to relocate from their usual places of abode during elections.
“When we are close to elections, people save water, food, some withdraw money and some even relocate. How long can we do this to ourselves?” he wondered.
He appealed to the EC to try and implement all the necessary electoral reforms in 2015 in order to reduce potential tensions ahead of the 2016 elections.
