Our lives are not safe in Ghana’s hospitals – Okyehene

The Paramount Chief of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area, Okyehene Amoatia Ofori Panin II has said Ghanaian lives are not safe in the country’s hospitals.

Lamenting about how the Apedwahene of his area died at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital almost two weeks ago just because there were no medical officers to attend to him, the President of the Eastern regional house of chiefs told an audience at the second golf awards ceremony at La Trade Fair on Saturday night that: “Lives are not safe in this country anymore and it bothers us.”

The Apedwahene, according to the Okyehene died while in an ambulance awaiting medical officers to attend to him at the major referral hospital.

He said for 30 minutes, the Apedwahene was in the ambulance at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital because there was “no bed and no doctor” to attend to him.

“I want to let everybody know that it could happen to any of us,” he warned.

“…The Apedwa story scares me. I live in Kyebi, and if nobody could help him in Korle Bu, I don’t know what chance I have in Kyebi,” he feared.

“This is the country that we live in, and for us we just cannot keep quiet.

“We need to speak. We need to make recommendations. We need to challenge those who have taken our country for granted and say to them, not again,” he said.
