Wereko-Brobby backs privatisation of ECG

Former Chief Executive Officer of state power producer, Volta River Authority (VRA), Dr Charles Wereko-Brobby has said he is in favour of privatising state power distributor Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) if that is what it will take to supply regular power for Ghanaians and industries.

“There’s nothing wrong with privatisation,” he told Kwadwo Asare Barfour Acheampong (KABA) on ASEMPA FM’s Ekosii Sen political talk programme Monday.

“If privatising ECG will give you and me constant supply of power, and take us out of the ‘dumsor’ – erratic power supply – there’s nothing wrong with it,” he emphasised.

To buttress his point, Dr Wereko-Brobby cited the Asogli power plant as the most efficient power producer in the country because it is a private initiative.

According to him, there is already a lot of privatisation in the engineering sector. “We are not in a Socialist Republic.”

There are allegations the Managing Director of ECG, William Hutton-Mensah was reassigned recently over the privatisation issue.

Wereko-Brobby, however, told the show he doubts the Reverend Minister was moved because of that. Ghana is currently experiencing worsening power supply as a result of the shutdown of some production units of some thermal and hydro stations.
