GPRTU reacts to disgruntled members

The Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU) of Trades Union Congress on Tuesday disassociated itself from the invasion of its secretariat in Accra by what it described as “some disgruntled members of the association”.

A statement signed by Stephen Okudzeto, General Secretary of GPRTU and copied to Ghana News Agency in Accra on Tuesday, said the dissident members took the law into their own hands and invaded the secretariat, padlocked four offices and damaged one and drove out the staff and declared that “they have made a coup de tat against the elected and incumbent national executives of the union. They further alleged that they had taken over the administration”.

It said: “Article 29 of our union’s constitution provides any aggrieved member the opportunity to seek clearance and redress but unfortunately the members involved in the unlawful act…did none.”

The statement said their efforts were swiftly thwarted by the prompt action taken by the national officers and the Greater Accra Regional Police Command.

It said an emergency National Executive Council meeting was called and a decision was taken to issue out a query to the affected members to explain their conduct in writing.

“Management would also like to assure the public that the situation is under control and the elected national officers are still at post.”
