Fisherman commits suicide

Residents of Amissa-Ekyir, a fishing community in Cape Coast, woke up Saturday to the tragic sight of a 66 year- old man hanging dead on a tree behind his house.

Kodwo Oluku, a fisherman and father of one, believed to have hanged himself at midnight when he was noticed by a family member who was on his way to a fishing expedition around 0200 hours.

As at 0800 hours when Ghana News Agency (GNA) got to the scene, the lifeless body was lying under the tree , covered with a cloth which had an inscription “Asem kese aba fie” (Big tragedy has befallen the house) ,boldly embossed in it.

The body was said to have dropped to the ground as a result of the thin drying nylon rope he allegedly used to commit the act. Residents who could not hold their tears said several calls had been made to the various police stations in Cape Coast to no avail.

A family member who pleaded anonymity told the GNA that the last time the deceased was seen alive was at the wake keeping of another deceased family member the previous night but no one noticed the time he left the venue.

He said the family did not suspect any foul play because the deceased had once attempted to commit suicide.
