Government is considering a moratorium on the siting of higher institutions especially private universities in the Greater Accra, Ashanti and Western regions, a Deputy Minister of Education has hinted.
The decision is to decentralize the siting of universities in the country especially to “less-endowed regions”, the Deputy Minister said
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa made this known over the weekend during the 8th Congregation of the Ghana Institute of Journalism in Accra.
Four hundred and eighty-three students graduated after completing diploma and degree courses in Communications Studies.
Mr Okudzeto Ablakwa said government is reviewing Act 494 that establishes higher institutions in the country.
“We are proposing in the new amendment that there should be some moratorium on the siting of higher institutions especially private universities in Accra, Kumasi and Takoradi,” he said.
“We want to give incentive to private actors who will want to site their institutions in other regions and regions [one] will consider the less-endowed regions.”
The North Tongu Constituency Member of Parliament also said the review will ensure that private universities go through the National Council for Tertiary Education first for accreditation rather than the National Accreditation Board.
