FOUR persons are vying for the vacant Navrongo Central Constituency seat in the Upper East Region in a by-election slated for March 25, 2003.
Electoral Commission sources have disclosed the names of the candidates as Mr Clement Tumfuga Bugase, an agricultural engineer, and a former Deputy Minister of Agriculture for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Joseph Kofi Adda, a financial economist and management consultant for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Gabriel Pwamang, a lawyer for the People?s National Convention (PNC) and Ms Bagoniah Grace, a teacher for the Democratic People?s Party (DPP).
According to the EC, only these four personalities duly filed to contest the by-election at the close of nominations about a fortnight ago.
The sources also indicated that in line with the laws and regulations governing the conduct of elections by the Electoral Commission, a notice of poll for the Navrongo Central Constituency has been published. This is designed to formally notify the electorate of the area of the commission?s intention to conduct the poll on the said date.
A highly placed official of the commission who sought anonymity said all appropriate and relevant steps are being taken to ensure that the elections are conducted in a free, fair, orderly and peaceful manner to ensure that the verdict reflect the true will of the people of Navrongo Central.
The source also assured that election materials are being made ready and will soon be despatched to the area for distribution to the various polling stations on the election day.
The Navrongo Central seat became vacant following the death in January this year of the Member of Parliament for the area, Mr John Setuni Achuliwor, in a motor accident on the Ejisu-Kumasi road.
He was an MP on the ticket of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
