SEND-Ghana initiates campaign for Ebola victims

SEND-Ghana in collaboration with Trades Union Congress and other civil society organisations has initiated campaign to solicit for donations in cash and kind to assist victims in Ebola affected countries in the sub-region.

In this connection a meeting was held on Monday to form a working group to manage the campaign and move the agenda of Ghanaians against Ebola in West Africa forward.

Mr Siapha Kamara, Chief Executive Officer, SEND West Africa, said the initiative would mobilise clothing and food stuff from Ghanaians to the victims of Ebola in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.

He said Ghanaians would be asked to contribute clothing, soap, containers, toiletries and food stuff to support their brothers in the three affected countries.

It would also be used to educate Ghanaians on how to protect themselves against the Ebola viral disease.

Mr Kamara said farmers, teachers, nurses, students, market women, civil servants and civil society, among others are the target group of the campaign.

He said the campaign would be a way to encourage Ghanaians to share in the fight against Ebola and to strengthen the existing bond among the West African countries.

Mr Kamara said most of the surviving victims lack the means to sustain themselves as the viral disease has prevented people to engage in meaningful economic activities.

As of November 4, 13,268 cases and 4,960 deaths have been reported worldwide, the vast majority of them in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.
