Okyehene angry at gov’t over neglect of Eastern roads

The Okyehene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, has expressed anger over the “poor” state of roads in the Eastern region.

According to him, successive governments have ignored the infrastructural concerns of the region over the years.

Addressing chiefs of the region at this year’s Okyeman Congress at Bunso over the weekend, the Okyehene said : “ If you want to connect disadvantaged people to their communities, you don’t build superhighways, you don’t need that. I have always spoken about the state of our roads. I have personally spoken to the President about the nature of the roads here, but nothing has been done about it.”

He added: “Successive governments have abandoned us over the last 50 years. I encourage you all to use your influence in authorities to get the situation improved,” the enraged Chief stated.

The Okyehene, who is also the President of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, noted that the neglect of roads in general has contributed greatly to rural poverty.

He said government must concentrate on local level development if it is serious about reducing the spate of poverty in the country.
