Freeze salaries of striking workers – MP charges gov’t

Hon. Adjei Mensah, the Member of Parliament for Techiman South Constituency has called on government to freeze the salaries of the striking workers.

In his view, it is about time government took a bold step of withholding the salaries of the 12 labour unions that are on an industrial strike action due to their disagreement over the proposed trustee of the second tier pension fund.

“…if government does not take the bull by the horn in setting the precedence of blocking the pay of these workers, they will always hold every government hostage,” he said on NEAT FM.

The appeal by Hon. Adjei Mensah comes at a time when the leadership of organized labour say it is undaunted by the court order, which was secured by government, directing them to call off their two-week strike and return to work.

Twelve worker unions – Ghana Medical Association, Registered Nurses Association, Ghana National Association of Teachers, Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Coalition of Local Government Staff Association of Ghana, etc – called a strike last week in protest against government’s decision to choose a trustee to manage their tier two pension contributions.

The two-week-old strike has brought partial or complete shutdown of most public institutions in the country and for this reason, the MP for Techiman South wants their salaries frozen.
