Mahama: Ghana hasn’t decided on AFCON 2015 yet

President John Dramani Mahama has insisted that Ghana is yet to take a decision on a request from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to host the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

The West African country has been approached by CAF to host after Morocco’s hesitation to host the tournament for fear of the deadly Ebola disease.

President Mahama asked all and sundry to disregard any talks that Ghana has accepted the request from the continent’s governing body on football.

President Mahama made this known to Ghanaians in the United Kingdom on Sunday, October 19 upon arrival to begin his official visit.

Minister of Youth and Sports Mahama Ayariga last week disclosed on TV3 that Ghana is ready to host the tournament aside its bid for the 2017 edition.

Ghana’s consideration of CAF’s request has raised hackles in many quarters especially among members of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), who are calling on government to think through the decision before taking it.

“I am president of Ghana. I chair Cabinet. No such decision has been taken by Cabinet advising me to accept to host.”

He assured that the best decision favourable to Ghanaians is what will be taken.

“As president, I don’t want to see Ebola spread to my country and so if Morocco expresses concern that that is one of the concerns for which they want a postponement, we are going to look at that carefully before we host AFCON or not, but certainly 2017 we are putting in a bid for it.”

The tournament is three months away.
