ECOWAS send food items to Ebola countries

The Government of Ghana- on behalf of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Friday dispatched a quantity of food items to the three Ebola affected countries.

The food items made up of 3,000 bags of rice, 900 cartons of cooking oil and 900 boxes of cocoa products to be distributed to Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone for the upkeep of victims of the virus disease.

Mr. Prosper Douglas Bani, Chief of Staff who presented the items for airlifting said ECOWAS had contributed a total of $3million to cater for the needs of the affected countries.

He said President Mahama as the Chairman of ECOWAS had appealed to the United Nations to support them to step up preventive measures in other countries that were not affected -to avoid the spread of the virus disease in the sub-region.

He expressed satisfaction that the United Nations, United States of America and some European countries have started supporting the ECOWAS to cater for the victims and gave the assurance that they would work judiciously with the resources available.

Mr. Bani said Ghana had completed the Tema Ebola treatment centre, while those at Kumasi and Tamale were almost completed, adding that facilities at the Noguchi Medical centre had also been supported to efficiently and effectively work on any suspected case.

Mr. Arafan Kabine Kaba, Guinean Ambassador to Ghana, on behalf of his colleagues commended the Government of Ghana and the entire sub-region for their neighbourly support since the outbreak of the disease. He therefore gave the assurance that the items would be put to good use.
