ECG explains use of prepaid meters

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Saturday held a community durbar with residents of Ako Adjei and Nyaniba Estates in Accra to demonstrate to them the use of prepaid meters.

Mr Alex Anwobor, Marketing Officer of the Greater Accra East office of the ECG told the GNA that the company has embarked on a prepaid meter installation project in the two areas, where a total of 1,500 to 2000 meters would be installed.

He said already 30 meters had already been installed at Nyaniba Estates.

Mr Anwobor said the project is expected to be completed by mid-March this year, after which the facility would be extended to Kanda, Ashongman, Teshie Nungua estates, Ringway estates and the Ridge estates.

He explained that compound-houses are being skipped over for the meantime because of the problems associated with the payment of bills by tenants.

The residents were taken through the billing system, how units are calculated, energy conservation and the safe productive use of electricity.

According to Mr Anwobor the prepayment system has a lot of advantages as it has no risk of disconnection, because the customer manages the units consumed.

He explained further that tenants who vacate their places cannot leave unpaid bills for landlords.
