African Governments have been called upon to evolve mechanisms that will involve traditional leaders in the promotion of good governance on the continent. The Presidential Advisor on Chieftaincy Affairs, Nana Akuako Sarpong, stressed this point when he returned to Ghana after leading a government delegation to a three day Commonwealth Local Government Forum in Gaborone, Botswana. The forum, which was held under the auspices of the Commonwealth Local Government Forum and the Commonwealth Secretariat, was to provide a charter for the development of Local Government administration to involve traditional rulers. Nana Akuako Sarpong stated that if traditional rulers and Local Government Authorities are brought together into the mainstream of Local Government administration, it will enhance efficiency and good governance. He said Ghana presented a paper on her model of Local Government structure which recognises the role of traditional institutions. The conference was also attended by traditional deaders, Mayors and government officials from Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe and the Gambia. Other members of Ghana’s delegation were the Presiding Member of the Kwahu South District Assembly, Mr.. Mike Bamfo, and the General Secretary of the National Association of Local Authorities, Mr.. Adjei Annang.
