The government estimates that, the National Identification System could cost between $40 million to $60 million when implemented.
Though the exact cost is not readily available, official sources say, the cost could go beyond the estimated $40 – $60 million dollars if computerised identification cards are to be produced and provided to the citizenery. The cost could however be reduced to about $15 million, if I.D. cards are not going to be provided.
The Coordinator of the National Economic Dialogue, Mr Stephen Asamoah Boateng disclosed this on Peace fm on Tuesday. According to him, the I.D. system would entail the gathering of information on everybody living in the country, including non-nationals, for processing.
Although Mr Asamoah Boateng could not disclose the source of funding for the project, he stated that, the government will sell the data to agencies that will require them for their businesses.
