ECG to rehabilitate electricity lines in Community 1 Market

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has engaged the services of Komfather Company Limited, a locally based electrical contracting firm, to carry out the rehabilitation of the electricity distribution network in the Tema Community 1 main market.

The project is a continuation of the company’s plans to replace all sub-standard networks in the all the major markets within the company’s operational areas across the country. ECG has identified about 16 markets across the country with similar problems, which have to be rehabilitated.

So far, out of the number, the company has started similar works at the Asafo Market in Kumasi, Mallam Attah, Agbogbloshie and the Kaneshie markets, all in Accra.

This was disclosed by Mr. Mark Asumeni-Wiafe, Tema Regional Engineer of the ECG, when he led officials of the company to pay a courtesy call on the Metropolitan Chief Executive of Tema, Isaac Ashai Odamtten, last Thursday to brief him and officials of the Assembly on the extent of work to be executed at the market.

According to him, the work will involve excavation of some parts of the market, which may create some inconveniences to the occupants of the market.

He said the project can also attract some resistance from the market women, and as a result, the Region has outlined plans and programmes to educate all the stakeholders, especially the market women, for a better understanding as to the need for the project.

Isaac Ashai Odamtten outlined the Assembly’s plans and programmes for the market, which include the provision of electricity.

The TMA boss advised the ECG officials to incorporate that into the rehabilitation project, so that when the street lights are installed, the capacity of the transformer they would provide for the market can withstand the demand.

After the meeting, officials from both the nECG and TMA witnessed the official handing over of the project, which is scheduled to be completed within four months after the date of commencement, to the contractor at the site for work to commence.
