Fire outbreak throws part of C/R into darkness

A fire outbreak at the Volta River Authority power station at Winneba last Saturday night had thrown six districts in the Central Region into darkness.

The districts are Winneba, Kasoa, Apam, Dawurampong, Agona-Swedru and Gomoa Dago.

Mr. Justin Goka, Fire Safety Officer at the Winneba Fire Station, who made this known in a telephone interview with the GNA on Sunday, said the station received calls at about 1830hrs on Saturday that there was a fire outbreak at the sub-station.

He said, it took personnel from five stations in Winneba, Apam and Agona Swedru about two hours to bring the fire under control but could however, not mention the cause of the fire and the extent of damage to the sub-station.

He said one big transformer was completely burnt down.

According to him, two fire service personnel, who collapsed and were rushed to the Winneba Government Hospital were responding to treatment.

Meanwhile, the situation had affected water supply in the Winneba Township as the Water Company claimed there was no electricity to pump water to the public.
