Court remands two for attempting to commit crime

An Accra Circuit Court on Wednesday remanded two persons who were alleged to have conspired, attempted to commit crime and had in their possession, narcotic drugs without lawful authority into police custody.

The two, Corporal Jacob Lartey, with service No 196862, a soldier, and one Jacob Lartey, a lotto writer, both pleaded not guilty to the charges, but were remanded by the court to reappear on September 29.

Prosecuting Chief Superintendent of Police Duuti Tuaruka told the court that the complainants Abiodun Abraham and Emmanuel Nelson Opara are Nigerians and reside at Spintex Community 18, Lashibi.

He said Corporal Lartey is a military officer stationed at Base Ammunition Depot Michel Camp, Tema Community 2, while Jacob Lartey is a lotto writer at Korle Bu Mortuary Road and their two other accomplices are now at large .

He said on September 14, at about 1100 hours the complainants went to Global Access Western Union, Spintex Road to withdraw money. After withdrawing the money they boarded a taxi and left the bank en route home.

The prosecution said the accused persons chased the complainants on board another taxi to Nungua Adogonno. On the way they stopped the complainant’s taxi and subjected them to severe beatings amidst shocks from a heavy duty stun gun in the presence of a witness.

He told the court that Emmanuel quickly run to a nearby drinking spot and handed over the money to the sales girl for safe keeping. The accused forced the complainants into their taxi and drove off.

Chief Superintendent Tuaruka said Jacob Lartey returned to the scene with Abraham with the intent to collect the money from the sales girl, where he was arrested by the police.
