Right conditions needed for academic excellence

Parents and other stakeholders have been urged to play their expected roles well to make the school environment academically friendly.

Mrs Emma Amoateng Mensah, Ashanti Regional Coordinator of the Girl Education Unit, said they should all share in the responsibility of creating the right conditions for effective teaching and learning.

It is important not only to put the kids in school but to make sure that they are retained, something that demands providing for their basic needs including the full complement of books.

She was speaking at the end of a two-week girl education conference held at the Yaa Asantewaa Senior High School (SHS) in Kumasi.

The theme for this year’s programme was “Improving the performance of girls and boys in school: We as parents”.

The girl education conference initially was exclusively meant to support the girl-child education but this has now been broadened to include the school needs of boys.

This year’s event brought together students, teachers, parents, officers of the Ghana Education Service (GES), and house masters and mistresses of some SHS to discuss ways to improve academic performance.

Among the wide range of topics treated were “School health management”, “Building self esteem”, and “GES rules and regulations”.

There were also career and guidance sessions for the students.

Mrs Mensah reminded the students to take responsibility for their education by studying hard.

They should avoid doing anything that could ruin their future, she added.
