Cholera kills two people in Agona West Municipality

Two people have been reported dead at the Agona Swedru Government Hospital following an outbreak of cholera that has hit the Agona West Municipality over the past one month.

Mr Anim Boanu, the Deputy Agona West Municipal Disease Control Officer, said as at 20th August, 128 suspected cholera cases had been recorded at the Agona Swedru Hospital.

He said this when he addressed the second ordinary meeting of the Agona West Municipal Assembly at Agona Swedru.

Mr Boanu said some of the patients were brought from Gomoa East and Awutu Senya districts, adding that most of the patients had been treated and discharged.

He said the Agona West Municipal Health Directorate, in collaboration with Agona Swedru Municipal Hospital, had put in place mechanisms to prevent the spread of the disease in the area.

Mr Boanu said the Health Directorate had also directed all sub-district health facilities in the Municipality to refer any suspected case of cholera to Agona Swedru Government Hospital early.

He urged Assembly Members to collaborate with the chiefs, opinion leaders and other stakeholders in the Municipality to intensify public education about cholera to avoid spreading.

On Ebola, Mr Boanu said the Health Directorate had drawn up a programme to sensitize the people about the dreadful disease which had hit Serra Leon, Liberia, Guinea and Nigeria.
