It’s ‘premature’ to impeach Kwabena Agyepong – Blay

A vice chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Freddie Blay, has described as “premature” calls for the impeachment of the General Secretary of the party for taking unpopular decisions.

Kwabena Agyepong has been heavily criticised by the leadership and members of the largest opposition party in Ghana for taking unilateral decisions and allegedly breaching the party’s constitution.

The NPP General Secretary last week asked the party’s communications director to proceed on leave – a decision which has been met with serious discontent by some leaders and members of the party.

A press conference to explain the reasons behind the “proceed on leave directive” turned bloody as angry machete-wielding supporters threatened to kill the general secretary.

Several high ranking members including National Committee Member of the party, F.F Antoh, had earlier said the former flagbearer-aspirant could be punished – possibly removed from office – for taking those decisions.

However, Blay, who condemned the violence at the NPP headquarters told Asempa FM that impeachment of the general secretary now is not ideal.

He called on the party’s leadership to immediately summon a meeting to investigate and address reasons behind the confusion that has rocked the party.

The former second deputy speaker of Ghana’s Parliament added that Agyepong must be made to explain some of the decisions he has taken since he assumed office a few months ago.
