“He (BoG governor) shall be appointed by the President acting in consultation with the Council of State for periods of four years each;
(b) he shall, notwithstanding article 285 of this Constitution be the chairman of the governing body of the Bank of Ghana; (c) his emoluments shall not be reduced while he continues to hold office as Governor; (d) he shall not be removed from office except on the same grounds and in the same manner as a Justice of the Superior Court of Judicature, other than the Chief Justice, may be removed,” says Article 183:4 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.
The quotation above might be in response to those who are asking President John Dramani Mahama to dismiss the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Henry Kofi Wampah for his inability to save the ever depreciating Cedi.
According to this section of the constitution, President Mahama cannot just sack Dr Wampah.
However, Bernard Mornah, General Secretary of the People’s National Convention (PNC) says the country cannot continue to suffer all because the BoG governor cannot be sacked.
He said since Dr Wampah is not willing to resign willingly, there should be a way for him to be changed and for a new person who can help turn the economy around to come on board.
“You cannot continue to keep somebody who is running down the fortunes of the economy on the basis of security of tenure. We need to analyse if he can do the work or not. If he is leading us into a mess should we continue to sit for him to lead us into a mess? And so I will agree with those who are calling on him to resign,” he said during a panel discussion on Peace FM morning show ‘Kokrokoo’.
