Usaid Commended for Assistance to Gov’t

The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Nana Akomea, has commended the United State Agency for International Development (USAID) for the assistance they have given to the tourism industry in the country.

The assistance, he added, is to help address the needs of the ministry’s training centre and also build capacity in events management of the ministry.

The deputy minister said this when the Georgia State University presented documents for the implementation of a tourism capacity development initiative project in Accra yesterday.

The project director, Earl Picard, said the university would co-ordinate with the ministry, public and private sectors, stakeholders and other tourism oriented entities to improve the capacity and performance of the industry.

He added that the principal objectives would be invested to accomplish five areas comprising assistance to market Ghana’s tourism attractions, human resource development and capacity building for all aspects of the tourism industry.

Dr. Picard said the inputs provided for the project would further make tourism the country’s main foreign exchange earner.

He thanked the USAID, the government and the sector ministry for the commitment to forge the partnership.

The $5million project was awarded to the university by the USAID to assist in the expansion of the tourism industry in Ghana.
