A Ghanaian policy think tank, Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), has proposed that the country caps its parliamentary seats at 400.
The world’s second largest cocoa-producer currently has 275 seats in Parliament.
The IEA made the suggestion for an additional 125 seats after its ‘Winner-Takes-All’ Advisory Committee’s nationwide consultation exercise.
Committee Member, Emile Short, said there should be an affirmative action system where the additional seats will be reserved for marginalised groups such as women and persons with disabilities.
Just before the Ghana’s 2012 general elections, its Electoral Commission carved out 75 additional seats to bring the number to the current 275.
That exercise sparked accusations of gerrymandering against the governing National Democratic Congress.
