Traders defy city authorities; rebuild burnt structures

Traders at the Kumasi central market have defied orders from the Ashanti Regional Coordinating council and Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly not to reconstruct their stores after it was ravaged by fire four days ago.

The second-hand clothing section of the market was the most affected in the inferno with several thousands of items lost to the flames.

Both the regional minister and the KMA boss who visited the scene beckoned the traders not to rebuild their wooden structures, but allow for a complete and organized reconstruction of that side of the market.

However, ultimate radio can confirm that some traders are almost done putting back their stores despite the order.

Ultimate Radio’s Joseph Oppong Brenya, who has been following developments at the market, reports that the reconstruction is brisk in the area.

He says the traders are still building in the same disorganized fashion as persisted before the fires.

At press time, the Kumasi metropolitan Assembly was locked up in a meeting to take a decision on the matter.

Spokesperson for the mayor, Samuel Gyamfi told Ultimate Radio, the decision to allow the traders to continue building their stores or otherwise will be arrived at after the meeting.
