VR records reduction in road crashes

The Volta Region recorded a 7.31 percent reduction in road crashes during the first half of 2014, down from 383 last year to 355 the same period in 2013.

Ms Joana Fafa Ayer, Assistant Planning Officer of the National Road Safety Commission in the Volta Region, told the Ghana News Agency on Friday.

She said 343 people were also injured during the first half of 2014, as against 406 in 2013.

Ms Ayer attributed the feat to sustained road safety campaigns, and the involvement of the traveling public in safety campaigns.

“Our safety desk at the Ho main lorry station is helping a lot with complaints and suggestions from travelers,” she stated.

Ms Ayer said despite the achievement, a total of 62 persons were killed in those crashes, as against 61, during the same period in 2013.

She said the Commission had begun an “operation use crash helmet,” from June to December this year to reduce road crashes, and called for public support.
