Welder jailed 5 years for possessing a pistol

An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced Moses Adzamil, a welder, to five years imprisonment in hard labour for possessing a locally manufactured pistol. The convict pleaded guilty with explanation, saying he wanted to register the weapon but could not.

He said he pulled out the weapon to scare some group of boys who always taunt him, anytime he visits a bar in the neighbourhood to take a bottle of beer. “The mistake l did was that the weapon was not registered,” adding that, the weapon has been in his possession for the past four years.

Prosecuting, Deputy Superintendent of police, Ernest Acheampong told the court presided over by Mr Francis Obiri that on July 6, the complainant in the case heard an unusual noise in one of the drinking spots around Agbogbloshie. He said the complainant went in and met the convict holding a locally made pistol.

He said the complainant enquired from the bar attendant, who said the convict bought a drink but failed to pay. The prosecution said the convict brought out the pistol and asked the bar attendant whether he knew who he was.

“The Complainant arrested the convict and handed him over to the police for further action,” DSP Acheampong added.
