The chiefs and people of Upper Manya-Krobo District have appealed to be made beneficiaries of the Koforidua- Asesewa Water Project, which takes its sources from the district.
Originally, the project with its intake at the Volta-lake at Ponponya-Fatem in the Upper Manya -Krobo District, was to supply potable water to 13 communities along the Koforidua – Asesewa road, Asesewa Township and the surrounding communities.
However, on completion of the project, no community in the entire district was linked to the project, whilst Koforidua, Tafo, Osiem, Bunso and other communities in the region benefited from the project.
The Ghana News Agency (GNA) Media Auditing and Development Tracking Project team, being sponsored by STAR-Ghana a multi-pooled donor project, gathered that, on many occasions, the District Chief Executive, Mr Joseph Tetteh Angmor and successive Members of Parliament, had intervened to prevent issues from getting out of hand when the people attempted to protest about the situation.
Asesewa, the district capital, is currently relying on a borehole which does not meet the needs of the people, while the over 100 communities within the district rely on streams and other sources for their water needs.
At a meeting organised by the Dademantsemei Union in the district to deliberate on a strategy to demand for what was due the district, Mr Samuel Ofoe Narh, Chairman of the Union, told GNA that, the people were being treated unfairly, and wondered why those at the source of the water should be struggling for water to survive.
He said “the situation had persisted for far too long, and the patience of the people had run out.”
