People who are O positive asked to donate more blood

Mr. Emil Anornu, Senior Blood Donor Organizer at the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital has asked people in the blood group “O” positive to frequently donate blood to help meet the health needs of people.

He said the “O” positive group remained the commonest and widely used blood group in hospitals.

Mr. Anornu told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) over the week end that currently the hospital which has a capacity to store more than 600 units of blood only stores between 150 and 200, saying, this is a worrying situation that needed urgent attention from all well-meaning Ghanaians.

He said as a referral facility and supply of blood products to districts health centres and hospitals, it was imperative that the Regional Hospital had adequate storage of these products to meet the daily blood needs of clients.

The Hospital’s blood bank, according to him, relied mostly on benevolent institutions and churches who regularly organize blood donation exercise to support the Regional Hospital.
