Law firm alleges of massive human rights abuses of suspects in Ghana

A Private law firm, Help law Ghana, is alleging massive human right abuses within the country’s criminal justice system.

The institution’s founder Eric Delanyo Alifo says police personnel on several occasions, torture or use violent means to get confessions from suspects who are mostly not guilty.

He said this development has led to the jailing of many innocent persons.

Mr. Alifo’s concern follows similar worries of Supreme Court Judge, Justice Jones Dotse, who had described Ghana’s criminal Justice System as a time bomb waiting to explode.

Mr. Alifo told XYZ BREAKFAST show host Moro Awudu that the country needs to get serious about tackling the challenges confronting its justice system.

“The system is so oppressive to accused persons so that I believe that many of the people who are in our prisons may be innocent. My biggest issue is the fact that most of these people who cannot afford the services of lawyers are not assisted at all,” Mr. Alifo said
